Aluminum

Aluminum is the most commonly used material for the production of mirrors.

Aluminum coating

Aluminum is easy to evaporate (PVD) and is therefore the preferred material for many applications from UV to NIR. It is therefore the most commonly used material for the production of mirrors. However, the reflectivity of aluminum decreases over time. This is due to the formation of oxide on the surface. At the same time, however, this protects the surface from further oxidation.

Aluminum coatings can be easily vapor-deposited and show a uniformly high reflection in the visible range.

Layer structure: Aluminum layer with oxidic protective layer.
