Dielectric coatings

Dielectric coatings

Dielectric coatings are used for the production of customized optical components. Dielectric coatings are ideal for producing mirrors with reflections of over 99%.

Dielectric coatings

Optics are finished with a high-quality PVD coating to protect surfaces against environmental influences or to improve their optical properties.

The applied layer thicknesses are between a few nanometers and a few micrometers. A distinction is made between metallic coatings and dielectric coatings, whereby dielectric coatings are particularly suitable for laser systems due to their low absorption.

The application of optical coatings is a complex process. Important parameters are the refractive index, the temperature of the substrate, the vacuum and the coating speed. The materials are then selected based on the optical, mechanical and chemical properties.

  • High resistance to environmental influences
  • Extremely thin layers
  • Lower absorption than with metallic coatings
  • Wide range of applications
  • PVD coatings of the highest quality

Dielectric glass coating

Optical coatings made of metals sometimes have considerable absorption losses. For this reason, the reflection is too low for many technical applications. Therefore, only dielectric coatings are used for highly reflective mirrors. These transmit the non-reflected part and can therefore achieve very low absorption values.

Optimized for specific frequencies

Such coating systems are optimized for one wavelength or one laser and thus achieve reflection values of up to 99.9%. The coating of glass enables the production of mirrors for one or two wavelengths and even for broadband applications. Such high-power coatings are optimized for high-performance laser applications.

Silicon coating

Coating silicon is a process used to produce high-power laser mirrors. The dielectric coating of silicon serves to increase reflection. The coating of silicon improves the properties of the surfaces for optical applications.

Optical components that have been provided with dielectric coatings can be used in a variety of ways:

  • In resonators
  • In deflection units
  • For beam shaping

With the right cooling and assembly, these mirrors with dielectric coatings can handle laser powers of up to several kilowatts. We would be happy to inform you about our range of services in an individual consultation.

Applications Areas of application for this coating

  • Optical measurement technology: thermography, FTIR, gas analysis
  • CO2 laser
  • Other optics
  • Laser mirror: low power laser markings
  • Laser measurement technology: 3D scanner
  • Protective coating: corrosion protection, e.g. for copper mirrors
