Rhodium / Platinum / Chrome

Rhodium, platinum and chromium are used because of their high chemical stability, hardness and resistance to corrosion and extreme conditions, although their reflectivity is lower than that of gold, silver or aluminum.

Rhodium properties

Rhodium is a precious metal that impresses with its outstanding physical and chemical properties. With a high melting point, it is extremely resistant to heat. Rhodium is also characterized by its exceptional hardness and chemical stability.

These properties make it particularly suitable for use in dentistry, where rhodium mirrors are frequently used. The hardness of the metal ensures that the mirrors are durable and resistant, while the chemical stability ensures that they do not suffer corrosion even in an environment with various chemicals.

Platinum: Stability in extreme conditions

Similar to rhodium, platinum is also used for the production of mirrors that must remain stable under extreme conditions. Platinum has the unique property of not oxidizing.

This means that it is not attacked by aggressive gases or aggressive liquids. This oxidation resistance makes platinum an ideal material for mirrors in environments where high chemical stability is required.

Reflective properties of rhodium, platinum and chromium

While rhodium and platinum shine due to their physical and chemical properties, there are also other metals that are known for their reflective properties. Chromium is another metal that is considered in this context.

Gold, silver and aluminum have higher reflectance values

However, the reflectance values of rhodium, platinum and chromium do not reach the high reflectance levels achieved by metallic coatings such as gold, silver or aluminum. These metals offer superior reflectivity, which makes them preferable for certain optical applications.

Stability as a decisive factor

Despite their lower reflectivity, rhodium, platinum and chromium offer an ideal alternative for applications in extreme conditions due to their exceptional stability. Their resistance to heat, chemical attack and physical wear and tear makes them particularly valuable in areas where material stability is crucial.

Resistance in the optics

These metals are not only used in medicine, but also in industry and other areas where the highest demands are placed on material resistance.

Applications for this coating

  • Optical measurement technology: thermography, FTIR, gas analysis
  • CO2 laser
  • Other Optics
  • Laser mirror: low power laser markings
  • Laser measurement technology: 3D scanner
  • Protective coating: corrosion protection, e.g. for copper mirrors
